The Legislature consists on four cabinets chaired by Mariano Rajoy Brey (July 19, 2016-June 7, 2018) and three cabinets chaired by Pedro Sánchez Castejón (June 7, 2018-May 20, 2019).

Following the general elections held on 26 June, called pursuant to Royal Decree 184/2016, of 3 May (Official State Gazette 03/05/2016), the 12th Legislature commenced on 19 July 2016 with the formation of the two parliamentary chambers, the Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament.

The second government of the 11th Legislature remains as a caretaker government except for the Minister for Public Works who leaves her ministerial post to take on the functions of the Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament. The Minister for Justice takes on the ordinary functions of the affairs corresponding to the Ministry of Public Works.

As a result of the resignation of the Minister for Health, Social Services and Equality, in order to stand in the regional elections in the Basque Country, the acting Minister for Employment and Social Security, Fátima Báñez, has taken on the ordinary duties of the Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, pursuant to Royal Decree 323/2016, of 10 August.

The Minister for Education, Culture and Sport, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo, in addition to his ministerial portfolio, also takes on the post of Government Spokesperson (Royal Decree 418, of 3 November, published in the Official State Gazette on 4 November).

Following his appointment as Vice-President of the European Central Bank, Luis de Guindos resigns as Minister of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness and is replaced by Román Escolano Olivares.

Pool EFE/Fernando AlvaradoOn 1 June 2018, the vote of no confidence is passed, presented in the Lower House of Parliament by the Socialist Group against the government of Mariano Rajoy. Consequently, Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón is invested as the new President of the Government and Mariano Rajoy is removed from office. The government of Mariano Rajoy remains as a caretaker government until 7 June.

On 2 June, the Official State Gazette (Spanish acronym: BOE) publishes the Royal Decree with the appointment of Pedro Sánchez Pérez-Castejón as President of the Government, the seventh of the democracy. He is sworn into office before the King at Zarzuela Palace on the same day.

On 6 June, the new President of the Government announced the composition of his government at Moncloa Palace.

On 7 June, the BOE publishes the Royal Decree appointing the Vice-President of the Government and the Royal Decree appointing his Cabinet ministers, who are sworn into office before the King at Zarzuela Palace.
