Under the agreement signed on Friday, the Government of Spain and Barcelona Provincial Council will cooperate on two projects to be carried out over the next 10 years. The first consists of 150 solar panel installations on municipal buildings, while the second consists of 30 heat production installations based on biomass.

The two initiatives form part of the "Renewables 2030" programme, which in turn forms part of the energy transition strategies being implemented by the provincial council during its 2019-2023 mandate. The programme seeks to help reduce greenhouse gases by 40% by 2030 and to ensure that renewable energies account for 100% of power consumption by 2050.

The meeting, which also examined the needs of municipalities in the province, was also attended by the Minister for Territorial Policy and the Civil Service, Carolina Darias, the First Vice-President of Barcelona Provincial Council, Jaume Collboni, and the Second Vice-President of Barcelona Provincial Council, Carmela Fortuny. The signing of this agreement brought to an end the two-day visit by Pedro Sánchez to Catalonia.
