The Minister for Defence, Margarita Robles, accompanied by the Secretary-General for Defence Policy, Admiral Juan Francisco Martínez Núñez, has taken part, via video conference, in the 36th meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group, during which she reiterated Spain's firm and ongoing commitment to the country's defence in the face of Russian aggression.
The meeting focused on Ukraine's air defence capabilities, drones, missiles and artillery ammunition - all of which Ukraine needs to continue its defence.
During her remarks, Robles emphasised that "Spain continues to treat the most urgent needs communicated by the Ukrainian authorities as a priority". In this regard, she noted that, since February, more than 70 air defence missiles of various types, including 'Patriot' missiles, have been delivered. Furthermore, Robles reaffirmed the commitment to continue providing air defence support within the limits of our country's capabilities.
Similarly, there are plans for a forthcoming shipment of autonomous power generation units to ensure the electricity supply, following the Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
At the close of the meeting, Robles conveyed a message of unwavering resolve and insisted that Ukraine remains a priority for Spain. "Our support is total and constant", the minister affirmed, reiterating that Spain will continue to stand by the Ukrainian people for as long as necessary.
The video conference, chaired by her German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, and the UK Defence Secretary, Wes Streeting, was attended by the NATO Secretary-General, Mark Rutte, and the Ukrainian Minister for Defence, Yevheni Jmara. In addition to military officials from NATO and Ukraine, the European Union was represented by the Commissioner for Defence, Andrius Kubilius, who focused his remarks on the bloc's support efforts.
