Registered unemployment fell by 4,846 people last month, reversing the negative trend of the month of September

The total number of unemployed people registered in the offices of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) decreased by 4,846 people in September 2025 with respect to the previous month. This is the first time that unemployment has fallen in this month since 2007, aside from the period of the pandemic.

In year-on-year terms, unemployment fell by 153,620 people (-6%), well above, for example, economic growth rates.
It also fell in seasonally adjusted terms by 29,689 people.
The total number of registered people is 2,421,665, the lowest figure for a month of September since 2007.

Unemployment by economic sector
By economic sector with respect to August, registered unemployment fell in Construction by 4,670 people (-2.59%), Services 3,067 (-0.17%), Industry 1,422 (-0.75%) and Agriculture 1,166 (-1.52%).

The previously unemployed increased by 5,479 people (2.46%).
Unemployment by sex and age
Female unemployment decreased by 2,827 women (-0.19%) to a total of 1,468,904, the lowest level since 2008. It has only ever fallen in the month of September on three occasions in the entire historical series.

In year-on-year terms, female registered unemployment fell by 84,834 women (-5.46%).
Male unemployment stood at 952,761, a decrease of 2,019 (-0.21%).
Compared to September 2024, male unemployment fell by 68,786 (-6.73%) and female unemployment by 84,834 (-5.46%).
Unemployment among young people under 25 years rose in September by 16,085 people (9.60%) compared with the previous month, for a total of 183,716 young people, the lowest figure in the historical series for a month of September.

Registered unemployment by Autonomous Community
Registered unemployment in September fell in nine autonomous communities. The biggest falls in absolute numbers were in Catalonia (-5,293), the Canary Islands (-4,842), and the Valencian Community (-2,739).
Unemployment in the same month rose in the remaining eight regions, led by Andalusia (7,116), Galicia (3,394), and the Principality of Asturias (1,219).

New contracts
The total number of contracts registered during the month was 1,533,773. Of this total, 663,825 employment contracts were permanent, representing 43.28% of all contracts.

Unemployment benefits for August
The number of beneficiaries at the end of August was 1,875,821.
The coverage of the unemployment protection system during the month of August 2025 was 82.51%, the highest in the whole historical series.

The average monthly amount received per beneficiary, not including the agricultural subsidy in Andalusia and Extremadura, in the month of August 2025 was €1,372, which represents an increase of €267.3 (24.2%) over the same month of the previous year.
The total investment in benefits for the month of August 2025 amounted to €2,109 million.
