Unemployment rises by 21,905 in August to 2,426,511, its lowest level for the month since 2007

The number of unemployed people registered in the offices of the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) at the end of August increased by 21,905 (0.91%) with respect to the previous month.
Total registered unemployment stood at 2,426,511 people. This is the lowest level since August 2007.

In year-on-year terms, unemployment has fallen by 145,610 people (-5.66%).
There was also a seasonally adjusted fall of 6,075 people.
Unemployment by economic sector
By economic sector, registered unemployment fell with respect to July in the Agriculture sector by 1,849 people (-2.36%) and also among the Unemployed by 3,458 people (-1.53%).

It was up in Construction 2,745 (1.55%), Industry 2,775 (1.49%) and Services 21,692 (1.25%).
Unemployment by sex and age
Female unemployment increased by 11,748 women (0.80%) with respect to July and stood at 1,471,731.

The number of men out of work rose by 10,157 people (1.08%) to 954,780.
Compared to August 2024, male unemployment fell by 66,683 (-6.53%) and female unemployment by 78,927 (-5.09%).
Unemployment among young people under 25 years rose in August by 3,485 people (2.12%) compared with the previous month.

Unemployment by autonomous community
Registered unemployment in August 2025 fell in five Autonomous Communities. The biggest falls in absolute terms are in: Castilla-La Mancha (-1,047 people), the Canary Islands (-873 people) and the Chartered Community of Navarre (-150 people).

The regions of Catalonia (7,942 people), Madrid (4,214 people) and the Basque Country (4,178 people) lead the increases.
New contracts
The total number of contracts registered in August stood at 1,039,962. Of this total, 385,856 employment contracts are of an indefinite nature, accounting for 37.10%.

Unemployment benefits in July
The number of beneficiaries at the end of the month was 1,852,428. The coverage rate. The coverage rate of the unemployment protection system in July stood at 82.39%, 9.1% higher than in the same month of 2024 and the highest in the historical series except for the pandemic period.

The average monthly expenditure per beneficiary, not including the agricultural subsidy in Andalusia and Extremadura, in July 2025 was 1,315.4 euros, which is 252.6 euros more than in July 2024 (23.8%).
Total benefit spending in July 2025 rose to just over €2.0048 billion.
