Social Security once again exceeds 3 million foreign contributors in July

The Social Security registered 3,096,015 foreign contributors in the original series, one month more, the number of workers from other countries exceeds three million, after adding almost 200,000 employed in the last twelve months.

This is 1,069,456 more foreign contributors than in June 2018 and already represents 14.2% of the system's contributors. In fact, since the labour reform, more than 40% of the employment created corresponds to foreign workers.

"Spain is a country that welcomes and integrates, and the figure of more than three million foreign workers shows that they have chosen our country to develop their lives and talents, helping the economy to grow and guaranteeing our future. More and more people from other countries are working in high value-added sectors, where their experience and skills are essential for progress. They are colleagues in their work and daily lives, who bring culture, humanity and prosperity to our society," said Minister Elma Saiz.

In the seasonally adjusted series, the number is close to three million (2,999,225), 7,602 more than in June, which represents almost 14% of the total number of contributors.

Women now account for 43.4% of all foreign workers, with 1,337,730 foreign female contributors in the system.

General system

In line with the situation of native workers, 84% of foreign contributors were included in the General Social Security Scheme, reaching 2,597,825 workers.

The sectors with the highest presence of workers from other countries are: Hotels and Restaurants (29.9%), Activities of Extraterritorial Organisations and Bodies (28.3%), Agriculture (25.2%), Construction (22.3%), Administrative Activities (17.6%), Transport and Storage (17.4%) and Real Estate Activities (147%) and high value added sectors such as Information and Communications (12.2%), Artistic Activities (11.2%) and Scientific and Technical Activities (10%).

The increase in employment of foreigners over the last 12 months is around 6.9%. Ten sectors are above average, the fastest growing being Transport and Storage (30.2%), Water Supply (12.6%), Construction (10.8%), Manufacturing (9.3%) and Mining and Quarrying (9.2%).

Growth in high value-added activities is also noteworthy: Financial Activities (8.1%), Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities (6.3%), and Information and Communications (5.7%).

Of the total, 31% are workers from EU countries. By country, the largest number of contributors came from Morocco, followed by Romania, Colombia, Italy, Venezuela and China.

Record number of foreign self-employed

The enrolment of self-employed people from other countries reached a new record high in June: 486,905 people, 6.4% more than a year ago.

This growth is most pronounced in highly skilled sectors: in the last year, the number of self-employed foreign workers has increased by 29.7% in Information and Communications, and by 17.7% in Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities.

Meanwhile, foreigners are becoming increasingly important in the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers, accounting for more than 88% of employment growth this month.
