Unemployment falls by 76,113 people, the biggest drop in a September, and accumulates seven consecutive months of declines

The total number of people registered is 3,257,802.

With the fall in September, unemployment has now fallen for seven consecutive months, with the total number of unemployed people falling by 750,987.

There have not been seven consecutive months of declines since 2000, although the decline in 2021 is more than three times that of two decades ago (-201,649).

In year-on-year terms, there are 518,683 (-13.73%) fewer unemployed people.

Seasonally adjusted unemployment falls by 109,279 people.

Unemployment by economic sector

Unemployment fell in all sectors of activity with respect to August. In Services it fell by 39,312 (-1.68%) people, in Agriculture by 13,067 (-8.08%) people, in Construction by 12,309 (-4.53%) people, in Industry by 6,668 (-2.45%) people registered and, lastly, among the group Without Previous Employment it fell by 4,757 people (-1.68%).

Industry, agriculture and construction already have a lower level of registered unemployment than at the beginning of the pandemic.

Unemployment by sex and age

Female unemployment in September compared to August fell by 39,977 (-2.03%) women, to a total of 1,932,239.

Unemployment also fell among men, with 36,136 (-2.65%) fewer registered, bringing the total to 1,325,563.

On the other hand, unemployment among the under 25s rose in September by 5,838 people (2.38%) compared to the previous month.

There are 10,319 fewer young people registered in the SEPE offices than at the beginning of the pandemic.

Unemployment by autonomous community

Registered unemployment fell in 12 autonomous communities, including the Canary Islands (-20,699), Catalonia (-12,658), Castilla La Mancha (-10,720) and Castilla León (-10,281).

In September, the Canary Islands was the Autonomous Community in which unemployment fell the most, both in absolute and relative terms (-8.8%).

Thirteen Autonomous Communities and the autonomous cities have lower levels of registered unemployment than at the start of the health crisis.

Hiring data

The number of contracts registered in September was 1,923,846.

Of this total, 216,688 employment contracts are permanent. They represent 11.26% of all contracts. This represents an increase of 53,479 (32.77%) over the same period in 2020.

Permanent contracts in September are divided into 119,549 full-time and 97,139 part-time contracts in terms of the length of the working day. The former increased by 28,598 (31.44%) compared to September 2020 and the latter by 24,881 (34.43%).

The remaining contracts, to a total of 1,923,846 in September, are 12,207 training contracts and 1,694,951 other types of temporary contracts. Within the latter group, those for a specific job or service (full-time) account for 25.89% and temporary contracts due to circumstances of production (full-time) account for 25.58% of the total number of all contracts. Part-time temporary contracts account for 32.38%.

August benefits

There were 1,977,033 existing beneficiaries at the end of the month.

Total expenses in August 2021 amounted to 2.022 billion euros, 29.7% less than in the same month the previous year.

The average monthly expenditure per beneficiary, excluding the agricultural subsidy in Andalusia and Extremadura, in August 2021 was 1,047.5 euros, which represents an increase of 53.5 euros (5.4%) over the same month the previous year.

The total amount of ERTE benefit payments in August amounted to 256 million euros.
