The Social Security registers 82,184 more affiliates in September

The number of people affiliated with the Social Security in seasonally adjusted terms stood at 19,559,689 in September. The number of employed people exceeded the figure for February 2020, the month prior to the start of the COVID-19 health crisis, when 19,479,814 people were employed, the highest level of affiliation on record. In September, it grew by 82,184 workers compared to the previous month (0.42% more). In the last five months, 540,000 workers have been added.

Disregarding seasonality and the calendar effect, increases were seen across almost all activities, with particular intensity in Services (85,742). Industry added 2,366 people and Construction, 7,875. Industry has not stopped growing since June 2020, while Construction has been growing since February and Services since April. The only one to lose affiliates is Agriculture, with 8,588 fewer workers.

By sector, the growth in affiliation in relative terms in Maritime transport (4.8%), Creative, artistic and entertainment activities (3.5%) and Libraries, archives, museums and other cultural activities (2.08%) stood out. But it was Food and Beverage Services, with 21,400 more, Retail Trade, with 11,500, and Health Care Activities, with 9,000 more, that added the most affiliates in September in absolute terms.

The number of employees increased by 72,664, while the number of non wage earners increased by 2,790. This group has been growing steadily for the last 12 months.

Average affiliates

In average terms and without seasonal adjustment, the Social Security recorded 19,531,111 affiliates, 57,387 fewer than the average for August.

The General Regime recorded an average of 55,517 more workers (0.35%) in September, to 16,146,403 employed. The Special Agrarian System added 23,068 workers compared to August, and the Household System, 1,635.

The sectors with the highest increases were Education (5.51%), Administrative and Supporting Activities (1.93%) and Information and Communications (1.18%).

The Self-Employed Regime saw an average of 3,319,875 affiliates in September, 4,272 more than the previous month (0.13%). The Sea Regime accounted for 63,778 employed people and the Coal Regime saw an average of 1,055 affiliates.

In August, the Canary Islands (2.22%), Castilla-La Mancha (1.35%), Madrid (1.31%), La Rioja (1.03%), the Valencian Community (0.71%), the Basque Country (0.56%), Catalonia (0.36%) and Navarre (0.01%) added affiliates. On the other hand, the following, among others, recorded fewer affiliates: Cantabria (-2.01%), Asturias (-1.80%), the Balearic Islands (-1.62%) and Murcia (-0.85%).

Year-on-year growth

In the last year, affiliation has grown by 654,722 people, an increase of 3.47%. The sectors that increased the most in September compared to the previous year in the General Regime were Information and Communications (8.43%), Hotels and Restaurants (8.31%) and Arts, Entertainment and Recreation (7.99%).

In terms of territories, in the last twelve months, all autonomous communities and the two autonomous cities have seen increased in new employees. Of note is the increase in Social Security affiliates in the Balearic Islands, 8.64% more in the last 12 months; the Valencian Community, which grew 4.26% and Andalusia, 3.94%.
