Unemployment fell by 39,012 in April and has now fallen for two consecutive months

The number of unemployed people registered with the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), at the end of April fell by 39,012 compared to the previous month. In relative terms, unemployment fell by 0.99%. This is the second consecutive month in which the number of unemployed people has fallen.

Thanks to this decrease, the total number of unemployed people is 3,910,628.

Unemployment fell in almost all autonomous communities, in all four sectors of activity, in both sexes and in all age brackets, which gives consistency to the trend in unemployment reduction this month.

Registered unemployment by sector

Unemployment is falling in all economic sectors, especially services, which has a recurring trend in recent months. The following variations are seen with respect to March: in Services it fell by 32,192 people (-1.16%), in Industry it fell by 5,127 (-1.64%), in Construction it fell by 3,947 (-1.30%) and in Agriculture it fell by 2,622 (-1.35%).

The number of unemployed people increased by 4,876 (1.37%) in the group without previous employment.

Unemployment by sex and age

The number of unemployed people fell by 24,038 men (-1.44%) to bring the total number of registered unemployed to 1,647,503.

In the case of women, registered unemployment fell by 14,974 (-0.66%) people with respect to the previous month, leaving the total at 2,263,125.

Unemployment among young people under 25 fell in April by 1,909 (-0.53%) with respect to the previous month. Unemployment in the 25 and over age group also fell by 37,103 (-1.03%).

Unemployment by autonomous community

Registered unemployment fell in fourteen autonomous communities. The most significant falls were in Galicia (-9,941), Catalonia (-8,715) and the Basque Country (-3,039).

Unemployment increased in the Canary Islands (1,873 people), and remained practically stable in the Valencian Community (389 people) and Cantabria (34 more).

Signing of contracts

The number of contracts recorded in April was 1,356,845. This is an increase of 683,696 (101.57%) over the same month in 2020.

In terms of contract stability, 164,080 employment permanent contracts were recorded in April 2021. This represents 12.1% of all contracts. This is an increase of 105,038 (177.90%) over the same month last year. In cumulative terms, 627,893 permanent contracts were signed in the first four months of 2021. This is an increase of 66,287 (11.80%) over the same period in 2020.

Permanent contracts in April are divided into 102,632 full-time and 61,448 part-time contracts. The former increased by 65,133 (173.69%) and the latter by 39,905 (185.23%) compared to April 2020.

In regard to other contracts, up to a total 1,356,845 in April 2021 there were 6,222 training contracts and 1,186,543 other temporary contracts. Within the latter group, the following are of note: Work or Specific Service (full-time) with 28.14% of the total of all contracts, followed by Temporary contracts due to Production Circumstances (full-time) with 26.37%. Part-time temporary contracts account for 27.97%.

Benefits in March

The number of people receiving benefits at the end of the month was 2,228,589 and the total expenditure for the month was 2.579 billion euros.

The average monthly expenditure per beneficiary, excluding the agricultural subsidy in Andalusia and Extremadura in March 2021 was 1,185.5 euros.

The average gross amount of contributory benefit received per beneficiary in March 2021 was 867.7 euros, an increase of 17.6 euros over the same month the previous year (2.1%).

The outlay in payroll derived from furlough amounts to 720 million euros.
