The British Government has introduced an online procedure to apply for the Frontier Worker Permit.
The Frontier Worker Permit is a document that will allow entry into the United Kingdom to work, rent property and gain access to benefits and services, including healthcare, provided that the requisite demands are met.
This Frontier Worker Permit will be required to work in the United Kingdom as a cross-border worker as from 1 July 2021. Until such time, you may use your passport or national identity document.
In order to obtain the Frontier Worker Permit, you must fulfil the following requirements:
• Be from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein
• Live outside of the United Kingdom
• Have worked in the United Kingdom until 31 December 2020 as an employee or independent contractor
• And have continued working in the United Kingdom at least one of the 12 months since commencing work in the United Kingdom.
The cross-border worker who has not gone to work in the United Kingdom in the period of 12 months prior to 31 December 2020 may apply for this permit if this circumstance took place on one of the following grounds:
• People who were unable to work due to an illness or accident
• People who were unable to work due to pregnancy or to having given birth
• Unemployed people on an involuntary basis that are seeking employment or taking vocational training courses
• Unemployed people on an involuntary basis that are taking vocational training courses related to their previous employment
• People who cannot travel to work in the United Kingdom due to the coronavirus
Those people who wish to work in the United Kingdom for the first time as from 1 January 2021 and who have not worked there previously must apply for a visa.
