Pedro Sánchez advocates for universal and inclusive multilateralism in the face of attempts to dismantle the rules-based order

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, began his participation in the United Nations High-Level Week with a speech at the 'Partners for Multilateralism (P4M)' event, organised by the president of the European Council together with the leaders of Canada and Kenya. In his speech, the head of the Executive defended universal and inclusive multilateralism in the face of attempts to dismantle the rules-based order.

The President of the Government of Spain explained that 'coalitions of like-minded countries' are frequently formed, which work within small groups to find solutions to urgent problems. In light of this reality, he argued that "the response to a fragmented world cannot be further fragmentation" because peace, he said, "does not come from narrowing the circle of trust, but from widening it".

In his speech, Pedro Sánchez emphasised that "Spain remains firmly committed to multilateralism" through its opposition to war and its commitment to diplomacy, by championing sustainable development and a fairer international financial architecture, as well as by supporting "more inclusive and more legitimate" multilateral institutions that give a voice "to those who have historically been marginalised".
