Pedro Sánchez meets with Antonio Guterres and thanks him for the United Nations' work as a forum for cooperation and dialogue

The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has met with the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, in New York. As part of the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, the two leaders discussed the multilateral priorities they consider necessary in light of the geopolitical challenges facing the world today.

During the meeting, the President of the Government of Spain thanked him for his work at the helm of the UN, particularly given the current international climate of fragmentation and scepticism towards multilateral institutions. In this regard, Pedro Sánchez highlighted the value of Antonio Guterres's efforts to uphold the United Nations' central role as the primary forum for dialogue, cooperation and the search for shared solutions to global challenges.

The two leaders also highlighted the importance of strengthening international cooperation, amidst a climate of polarisation marked by conflicts such as those in Ukraine, Gaza and the Middle East.
