The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has made an institutional declaration at Moncloa Palace, to announce changes in the composition of the Executive, after communicating them first to the King, Felipe VI.
President Sánchez announced the appointment of Milagros Tolón Jaime as the new Minister for Education, Vocational Training and Sport. Tolón holds a degree in Geography and History from the Complutense University of Madrid, a teaching diploma from the University of Castilla-La Mancha, and her professional career also includes a prominent role in teaching, having worked as a professor at the Adult Education Centre in Toledo.
The head of the Executive also highlighted her "knowledge and experience at all levels of government in our country": at the local level, she was the first female mayor in the history of the city of Toledo; at the regional level, she has served as a member of the Cortes of Castilla-La Mancha, and at the national level, she has led the Government in Castilla-La Mancha through the Government Delegation, a position she held until now.
In conclusion, Pedro Sánchez highlighted Tolón's "essential experience" in an area where all levels of government in Spain have jurisdiction, namely education policy, "where the capacity for dialogue is essential, a defining characteristic of someone who will, I am sure, be an excellent Minister for Education, Vocational Training, and Sport for the Government of Spain," he said.
The President of the Government of Spain also announced that the Minister for Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz Delgado, will assume the functions of spokesperson for the Government of Spain. Elma Saiz has been part of the Government of Spain since 2023. She holds a law degree from the University of Navarra and specialises in taxation. President Sánchez stressed that, above all, she is "a great minister, with whom Spain has reached almost 22 million Social Security contributors".
Pedro Sánchez stressed that the progressive coalition government "is facing this stage with enthusiasm, renewed energy, and a renewed sense of purpose, ready to fight to advance every initiative with a willingness to engage in dialogue and with humility. And also with the certainty of having the best profiles to carry out this task.
Recognition of Pilar Alegría's work
The head of the Executive also took the opportunity to acknowledge Pilar Alegría's career as Minister for Education, Vocational Training, and Sports, thanking her for "her service, commitment, and unwavering dedication over these years," during which she has accomplished "great things". He stressed that Alegría "has led the largest investment effort in education in decades, with record funding for scholarships, guaranteeing equal opportunities; improving working conditions for teachers; and providing an unprecedented boost to early childhood education (ages 0-3)".
She also championed "major transformative legislation, such as the Sports Law, with a firm commitment to inclusion, women's sports, and the rights of athletes; and Vocational Training, through which we have elevated a key educational offering for the present and future of our country". "All in all, an outstanding service record," the president remarked.
