The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and H.M. King Abdullah II of Jordan have signed in Madrid the declaration for the establishment of a Strategic Partnership that will strengthen political, economic, social, cultural, cooperation and defence ties between the two countries. It is the highest level of relationship that two states can have with each other, and the first such agreement reached by Jordan with a Western country. This is the culmination of a process initiated by the President of the Government himself and H.M. the King of Jordan in 2023..

In addition to the Strategic Partnership, an extradition treaty was agreed, which establishes a legal framework for the reciprocal surrender of persons wanted for crimes under both legislations, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on agriculture, which will enable bilateral cooperation to exchange technical and legislative knowledge and experience, and promote sustainable rural development, the modernisation of farms, the use of renewable energies and the improvement of the quality of agri-food products.

Violence in Gaza

During the meeting between the President of the Government and the monarch in the framework of the official visit of H.M. the King of Jordan to Spain, the two leaders also discussed the situation of violence in Gaza. They discussed the UN International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Question, to be held in mid-month in New York, at which Spain and Jordan will co-chair one of the working groups, aimed at the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Pedro Sánchez also informed his interlocutor of the progress made on the draft resolution Spain is promoting together with Palestine before the UN General Assembly on Gaza, which will demand that Israel end the humanitarian blockade imposed on the territory and provide full and unrestricted access for humanitarian assistance. He also informed him of the EU's ongoing review of its association agreement with Israel on the grounds that Article 2 on respect for human rights is being violated.
