The chief executive stressed that women like Donna Strickland are "a great example for thousands of girls and young women" who are building their future in the field of disciplines such as science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics aimed at solving technological problems.
Donna Strickand is a Canadian physical engineer and pioneer in the field of laser research. Her work led to the creation of a multitude of applications used in the field of medicine, such as laser surgery applied to the treatment of tumours, diagnostic and microscopic imaging and eye operations.
In 2018, she was the third woman in history to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics, after Marie Curie (1903) and Maria Goeppert-Mayer (1963).
The acting Minister for Science and Innovation, Diana Morant, and the President of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIF), Eloísa del Pino, today presented her with the institution's Gold Medal for her pioneering research.
