The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has received the City of Athens Democracy Award from the Mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas. This award recognises individuals or organisations whose track record, achievements and moral integrity demonstrate a sustainable commitment to the defence and promotion of democracy, as well as an outstanding international profile.

After receiving the award - a marble sculpture by the artist Myrto Kapnisti of the Athens School of Fine Arts, symbolising the fundamental values of democracy - Pedro Sánchez expressed his gratitude and the honour he felt at receiving such recognition, which, he pointed out, also reflects the contribution made by the city of Athens itself to our civilisation: democratic values.

"Democracy is one of humanity's greatest achievements. It is not merely a political system. It is a shared commitment to freedom, equality, pluralism, social justice and the dignity of every individual", he argued. He also emphasised that democracy embodies the conviction that differences can be resolved through dialogue and institutions. For this reason, in a context of uncertainty, he urged that it must be defended and strengthened.

For his part, Mayor Doukas highlighted President Sánchez's commitment to defending peace, human dignity and international law. "With regard to Iran, you have championed diplomatic action over military action; Spain has recognised Palestine and you have supported the people of Gaza", he said. He also highlighted his defence of sovereignty over artificial intelligence and his fight against disinformation. "Today, in the face of another form of power - technological power - you have not hesitated to stand up to the major powers and to ensure that the future of AI cannot be left in the hands of a select few", he argued.

"Our responsibility is clear: to protect democracy", concluded President Sánchez, highlighting the value of the experience shared by Spain and Greece in restoring and rebuilding their democracies, and emphasising that "rights and freedoms require a constant commitment".
