The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has visited the area affected by the fire in Niebla this August - the largest wildfire in terms of area affected recorded in Spain in 2026, with 40,000 hectares burnt. The head of the Executive warned that this fire highlighted the effects of the climate emergency and reaffirmed his government's commitment to tackling its causes.
The president, accompanied by the Third Vice-President of the Government of Spain and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen, and the Government Delegate in Andalusia, Pedro Fernández, held a meeting with mayors from affected towns in Huelva and Seville. It was attended by councillors from Niebla; Villarrasa; Villalba del Alcor; Berrocal; Zalamea la Real; Paterna del Campo; Escacena del Campo; El Campillo; Valverde del Camino and La Palma del Condado in Huelva; El Madroño; Aznalcóllar and El Castillo de las Guardas.
The Government deployed more than 1,000 civilian and military personnel and 320 land and air resources to the operation to tackle this wildfire, and will cover 50 per cent of the cost of restoring the affected area. At its meeting on Tuesday, the Council of Ministers declared this area to be seriously affected by a civil protection emergency.
