Spain and Algeria have agreed to usher in a new phase in their bilateral relations by holding the 8th High-Level Meeting in October

During a joint press conference, Pedro Sánchez announced that the two countries will hold the 8th High-Level Meeting (HLM) this autumn, which will be preceded by political consultations between the two governments.

"It is essential to strengthen political dialogue between Spain and Algeria. Dialogue is the foundation on which everything else is built", said President Pedro Sánchez. The meeting will help to strengthen cooperation in areas such as the management of migration flows, the fight against terrorism, cultural cooperation and exchanges between the two countries.

During his official visit to Algiers, during which he also met with the Prime Minister, Sifi Ghrieb, the President of the Government of Spain emphasised that "Spain regards Algeria not only as a neighbouring country, but as a strategic partner and, above all, as a friendly nation", and emphasised that this visit demonstrates the desire to deepen that friendship and expand future-oriented collaboration.

In the economic sphere, the President of the Government of Spain expressed Spain's commitment to establishing itself as a strategic partner in the modernisation of Algeria's energy and industrial sectors. In this context, he highlighted the presence of executives from Spanish companies with a significant footprint in the country, assuring them of the Spanish Government's support. "I am convinced that, as we give new impetus to relations between Spain and Algeria, our private sector and our companies will play a key role, which the Government wishes to support and encourage", he said.

Pedro Sánchez highlighted Algeria's role as Spain's main supplier of natural gas so far in 2026, as well as the reliability of its supply against a backdrop of considerable international uncertainty. The president pointed out that the economic relationship extends beyond the energy sector and called for greater cooperation in sectors such as industry, infrastructure, food, services, technological innovation and digitalisation.

A bridge between Europe and Africa

At international level, both leaders agreed on the importance of strengthening cooperation between two countries that are set to act as a bridge between Europe and Africa. Pedro Sánchez stated that "only by working together can we successfully tackle the challenges that most concern our societies, such as the cost of living, security and the climate emergency".

The President of the Government of Spain highlighted Algeria's strategic role in ensuring stability in the Sahel and Spain's commitment to strengthening relations between the European Union and its Mediterranean partners, in line with the Spain-Africa Strategy 2025-2028, which aims to strengthen ties with the continent.

Pedro Sánchez emphasised that, in an international context characterised by significant geopolitical challenges, "cooperation and understanding between our countries are essential for promoting peace, security and sustainable development in our region".
