After the reading of the communication from Upper and Lower Houses of Parliament on the constitutional reform, the president of the Government of Spain signed the document with the new wording of paragraph 3 of Article 69 of the Spanish Constitution, which was then ratified by the King. The ceremony, held in the 'Salón de Audiencias' was also attended by the President of the Lower House of Parliament, Francina Armengol; the President of the Upper House of Parliament, Pedro Rollán; the President of the Constitutional Court, Cándido Conde-Pumpido and the President of the Supreme Court and the General Council of the Judiciary, Isabel Perelló, as representatives of the powers of the State.

The amendment of Article 69.3 of the Constitution establishes that the island of Formentera may elect its own senator, independent of the one elected by the island of Eivissa. The final wording of the article is therefore as follows:

"In the island provinces, each island with a City Hall or Island Council shall constitute a constituency for the election of Senators, with three for each of the larger islands - Gran Canaria, Mallorca and Tenerife - and one for each of the following islands: Ibiza, Formentera, Menorca, Fuerteventura, La Gomera, El Hierro, Lanzarote and La Palma".

Fourth reform of the Constitution since 1978

On 26 March 2026, the Plenary of the Lower House of Parliament approved, through a single reading procedure and after reaching the required three-fifths majority, the proposed reform, initiated by the Parliament of the Balearic Islands. Subsequently, on 22 April 2026, the Upper House of Parliament Plenary finally approved the amendment, also in a single reading.

Before this reform, Formentera shared representation in the legislative chamber with the island of Eivissa.
