The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, has welcomed in the Lower House of Parliament the Executive's proposal to appoint Teresa Peramato as the new Crown Prosecutor of the State. "The government has done what is required of it: nominate a woman with an extensive, recognised, independent, rigorous and feminist track record as the Crown Prosecutor of the State," he stated.

Pedro Sánchez once again highlighted the figures for the Spanish economy in his response to the leader of the People's Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo: "These are the results of this Government's management: 22 million people in employment, growth exceeding that of any other economy in Europe, and a reduction in the deficit and public debt", he argued.

Draft law on classified information

In his response to a question from MP Maribel Vaquero of the Basque Parliamentary Group (EAJ-PNV) regarding the declassification of documents in the Mikel Zabalza case, on the 40th anniversary of his arrest and death, the President of the Government of Spain began by expressing respect and solidarity with Zabalza's family.

Pedro Sánchez then pointed out that his government is "the first in the democratic era" to submit a reform of the Official Secrets Act to Parliament, "a Francoist law that had remained untouched for over half a century".

In this respect, the President pointed out that the draft law on classified information - one of the actions foreseen in the Action Plan for Democracy-is currently in the Constitutional Committee undergoing amendments, and that he is confident of the support of the parliamentary groups to pass it, as it is "one of the most important laws of this legislature".

In this context, Pedro Sánchez defended the government's commitment to transparency: "We believe in the public's right to know their history and, therefore, to have a modern law that finally establishes automatic declassification after certain periods have elapsed".

State investment in the Canary Islands

The head of the Executive defended the "record" figures for state investment in the Canary Islands before MP Cristina Valido of the Mixed Parliamentary Group. According to the president, the Government understands the unique circumstances of this region and is "deeply" committed to its present and future: "In the last six years, the Canary Islands have received 64% more state investment than under the previous administration; that is, €45.4 billion compared to €27.7 billion previously".

Pedro Sánchez highlighted the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which has provided more than €2.7 billion for the islands and has reached more than 42,000 people. Furthermore, the proposed advance payments will reach a historic record of €7.1 billion in 2026, 8% more than this year.

Finally, the president referred to the new royal decree law approved by the Council of Ministers on 25 November with urgent measures for the economic and social recovery of the island of La Palma, which represents an additional €100 million and, for residents, a 60% reduction in personal income tax.
