The President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, participated in the Global Summit for the Future, organised by GAVI (the Vaccine Alliance) together with the European Union and the Gates Foundation, as part of a replenishment conference that seeks to raise 9 billion euros for this initiative that has already helped vaccinate more than one billion children worldwide, especially in developing countries, against deadly and debilitating infectious diseases.
"Our commitment to the multilateral system and, in particular, to the global health system is absolute," stressed Pedro Sánchez during his speech, in which he underlined Spanish society's confidence in vaccination as a method of disease prevention, as well as the scientific certainty that vaccination is the most effective prevention formula for eradicating diseases, together with access to drinking water and sanitation.
For this reason, the president of the Government of Spain highlighted the "extraordinary" work of GAVI, to which Spain has contributed since its beginnings, with the aim of extending the benefits of vaccination to the entire world population.
Increase in the Spanish contribution
The president of the Government of Spain stressed that "Spain is ready to take a step forward, right now, when others are doubting, hesitating or retreating. We will renew and redouble investment in health, particularly in prevention and immunisation. In this sense, he announced that Spain "will increase our contribution to GAVI to 30% more than in the previous period, up to 130 million euros for the period 2026-2030".

In a context marked by the weakening of multilateralism, the decline in international cooperation, the proliferation of armed conflicts and an economic crisis that is hitting the most vulnerable countries particularly hard, the president of the Government of Spain called for "a step forward to give citizens confidence in international institutions capable of responding to common challenges."
In this sense, he pointed out the importance of the Fourth Conference on Financing for Development to be held in Seville from 30 June to 3 July, where health financing will hold particular significance in the Seville Platform for Action (SPA).
Bilateral meeting with Bill Gates
Within the framework of the Summit, Pedro Sánchez held a meeting with Bill Gates, Chairman of the Gates Foundation, the leading global health philanthropy. Both addressed the need for a renewed commitment to international cooperation, based on global solidarity and the achievement of sustainable, fair and inclusive development for all.
