Pedro Sánchez stressed the importance of working together, Europeans, Arabs and Islamists, to identify concrete actions to move towards this goal. He stressed that the international community must take a decisive step towards a just and lasting peace in the Middle East.
From the Arab side, the meeting was attended by the Saudi Arabian foreign minister, who heads the Contact Group, the Palestinian prime minister and foreign minister, Mohammad Mustapha, as well as the foreign ministers of Jordan, Egypt, Turkey and Qatar. Also, Bahrain's Deputy Foreign Minister and Secretary General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, and that of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Hussein Ibrahim Taha.
From the European side, the Norwegian and Slovenian foreign ministers, the Irish director general for foreign affairs and EU High Representative Josep Borrell attended.
The meeting, which continued in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, aims to consolidate a Euro-Arab/Islamic 'core-group' to promote new recognitions, encourage international action against those wishing to spoil Middle East peace efforts, and promote the two-state solution within the United Nations.
