During his speech, the head of the Spanish Executive stressed that: "Sudanese women and men have peacefully but heroically asserted their determination to build a new Sudan after decades of conflict and isolation. Spain is committed to supporting them, and that is why we are here today".

Spain, a member of the Group of Friends of Sudan, is committed to the country's political transition, which is essential for maintaining stability in the Horn of Africa and for the Sahel. Pedro Sánchez congratulated President Burhan, Prime Minister Hamdok and the Sudanese people for the "enormous progress" they have made in achieving the country's transition, a process which, he emphasised, "to be successful, must continue to be peaceful".

After three decades of international isolation, the main obstacle faced by the country is a deep economic crisis, aggravated by COVID-19. For this reason, Sánchez pointed out that "Spain is prepared to cancel all its bilateral debt with Sudan, something essential to achieve economic recovery" because, as he insisted, "we have to make sure that the Sudanese people begin to perceive the reward for the sacrifices they have made".
