Spain became European champions for the fourth time in history in Belgrade (Serbia) after beating France in the final on Sunday. Spain is now the first country to successfully defend this title since 1991. The team also won its seventh consecutive medal to add to those won in European championships, World Championships and Olympic Games.

In his speech, the President of the Government told the players that "Spanish society is very proud" of them for their victory, a product "of a job well done and the dedication, sacrifice and companionship" they demonstrate both on and off the court.

Pedro Sánchez said that Spain will continue believing in the team, to whom he wished the best of luck at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, for which the team has already qualified.

The event was attended by the Acting Vice-President of the Government and Minister for the Presidency, Parliamentary Relations and Equality, Carmen Calvo; the Acting Minister for Culture and Sport, José Guirao; the Chair of the National Sports Council, María José Rienda; and the President of the Spanish Basketball Federation, Jorge Garbajosa.
