Headquarters of the Royal Spanish Academy, Madrid

This is the second time that a President of the Government has taken part in a plenary session of the RAE, the previous occasion being by José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in 2005.

The Royal Spanish Academy, founded in 1713, has contributed since then to the expansion and conservation of the unity of the Spanish language, currently spoken by more than 570 million people throughout the world, a fact that the President of the Government sought to recognise when signing the visitors' book, in which he wrote "united in diversity, language is an element of cohesion, integration and union, never of separation or lack of mutual understanding".
