The Third Vice-President of the Government of Spain and Minister for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge announced in the Lower House of Parliament that the Proposal for the development of the electricity transmission network up to 2030, currently under consideration, "will entail an investment of over €17 billion, 30% higher than initially proposed and 144% higher than the current plan".

The planning proposal submitted for public consultation originally envisaged an investment of €13.6 billion to meet the country's needs and fulfil the objectives of the 2023-2030 National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan; however, after analysing the 2,566 submissions received, the investment volume has risen to over €17 billion.

"This is the largest investment in grids in history, and that is the result of our energy policy, of a country of opportunities and a country with immense appeal, because our energy policy has generated a great appetite for electrification: more industry, more housing and more renewables", said Aagesen.

Energy demand: the central focus of the planning

Unlike previous planning exercises, demand takes centre stage this time, accounting for 41% of the proposals received, followed by generation (40%) and storage (19%).

Thus, in the new text, following the consultation phase, connection points on the transmission network to meet new demands from the distribution network have increased by 52% compared to the original proposal, reaching 300, while points for direct consumption from the transmission network have risen by 12% to 162. Similarly, planned connection points for railway corridors and port electrification have increased by 75%, reaching a total of 59.

Following the consultation process, the number of substations has also risen by 17% to 193, and the planned length of power lines has increased by 11% to 6,706 kilometres; additionally, there has been a 6% increase in the length of existing networks undergoing capacity upgrades, bringing that figure to 8,164 kilometres.
