The agri-food and fisheries sector solidifies its position as the Spanish economy's leading exporter

The agri-food and fisheries sector has cemented its status as the Spanish economy's top exporter; sales last year totalled €78.044 billion - representing one-fifth (20.2%) of the total - and the sector also posted the strongest positive trade balance at €18.324 billion, despite a 5.9% decline in that figure.

Agri-food exports grew by 2.9%, whereas exports from the rest of the economy increased by 0.7%. The decline in the agri-food trade balance is attributable to a sharper rise in imports - up 6% - which reached a total of €59.720 billion.

These figures are drawn from the 2025 Annual Foreign Trade Report published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. The report provides a detailed, up-to-date analysis of key metrics and indicators, offering in-depth insight into the current state of foreign trade within the agri-food and fisheries sector, based on provisional 2025 data from the Customs and Excise Department of the Spanish Tax Agency.

The year 2025 was marked by various geopolitical tensions - such as the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, increased US import tariffs, and rising energy prices - events that impacted global merchandise trade.

The sub-sector with the highest export value was fruit (€11.918 billion), followed by meat (€10.548 billion) and vegetables (€9.352 billion). In terms of destination, more than two-thirds (67.2%) were bound for the European Union.
