Ana Redondo: "Spain's commitment to equality is economically viable; it is an alternative and successful model"

The Minister for Equality, Ana Redondo, took part in the panel discussion 'Digital technologies, data and the future of the care economy' at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Forum on Gender Equality, which is being held in Paris. He emphasised that the care economy in Spain "is strategic" because "it accounts for 2% of GDP". A step forward which, she pointed out, "has been made possible thanks to European funding and citizens and feminist movements that drove about a profound change".

Over these 50 years of democracy, thanks to those movements "which called for the narrowing of the gaps", care work has gradually become a "valued activity", bringing it out of the private sphere. For this reason, the Minister for Equality has emphasised the importance of building a "community that cares, a caring community, as we will all be carers and those being cared for".

During the discussion, Ana Redondo highlighted Spain's commitment to equality: "It is economically viable; it is an alternative and successful model." However, she warned of the risk of a setback in this area due to the rise of right-wing forces, "which are reactionary".

The minister's schedule in Paris continues with meetings with Dominique Vérien, Chair of the French Upper House of Parliament's Committee for Equality, and Yaël Braun-Pivet, President of the French National Assembly. On Thursday 9 July 2026, France's Minister Delegate for Equality and the Fight against Discrimination, Aurore Bergé, will host the Minister for Equality, Ana Redondo.
