The Minister for Industry and Tourism, Jordi Hereu, and the Minister for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, along with other attendees at the presentation of the industrial project
The project, backed by €138 million in public funding from the PERTE for Electric and Connected Vehicles, represents one of the biggest recent industrial initiatives in the field of electrification. This initiative reflects the public-private partnership model advocated by the Government to accelerate the transformation of the productive sector and attract high value-added investment.
During the presentation, the ministers highlighted the economic and social impact of the project, which is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, helping to boost the local economy and encourage people to settle in the region.
A key project for European strategic autonomy
Gotion's initiative centres on two main pillars: the manufacturing of cathodes, an essential battery component, and the development of advanced battery recycling systems designed to recover strategic raw materials.
This comprehensive approach reinforces the electric vehicle value chain in Spain and helps to strengthen European industrial autonomy in a sector considered critical.
Electrification is gathering pace in Spain
The Government of Spain has emphasised that this project forms part of a broader strategy to turn Spain into a European hub for electric and sustainable mobility, drawing on instruments such as the PERTE VEC, which has already mobilised over €3 billion and benefited nearly 400 companies across the entire automotive value chain.
This programme has been instrumental in attracting major industrial investment, such as the plants in Sagunto, Navalmoral de la Mata and Zaragoza, thereby consolidating a production network linked to the electrification of the automotive sector.
The growth of electric vehicles in Spain underpins this industrial commitment. In May 2026 alone, more than 12,300 electric vehicles were registered, representing a year-on-year increase of over 30% and a market share of more than 10%. So far this year, sales of electric passenger cars have risen by 45%, highlighting a structural shift in the sector.
Stability and a future for the industry
The ministers highlighted the Government's commitment to legal certainty, administrative efficiency and job security, which are key factors in the implementation of industrial projects of this nature. They also highlighted the importance of social dialogue with strategic companies like Renault, which is crucial for bolstering the sector's competitiveness in regions such as Valladolid.
The Government has hailed Gotion's arrival as a historic opportunity to advance decarbonisation, create quality jobs and consolidate a more innovative and sustainable production model.
Through initiatives such as this, Spain is strengthening its position in the global race to lead in electric mobility and takes a decisive step towards a more competitive and resilient industrial future.
