The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, signed an agreement today, 14 April, establishing a Strategic Diplomatic Dialogue Mechanism between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China.

Last October, Minister Albares and his counterpart, Minister Wang Yi, agreed in Hangzhou to establish a Strategic Dialogue to institutionalise and provide predictability for high-level meetings between Spain and China. Spain will thus equip its dialogue with China with an instrument similar to those used by other European Union countries.

The Spain-China Strategic Diplomatic Dialogue Mechanism will be chaired by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and will address bilateral, regional, global and other matters of common interest. The meetings will enable high-level promotion and follow-up of the 2025-2028 Action Plan, the concrete manifestation of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2025.

During the day, Albares also took part in a meeting with investors and in the meeting and subsequent official reception hosted by the President of the People's Republic, Xi Jinping, for the Prime Minister. The Minister also accompanied the Prime Minister to his working meetings with the Chairman of the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China and with the Premier of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, Li Qiang.
