Within the framework of the UN, NATO or the European Union, "our country will always defend democratic values, peace and stability".

This is the message that the Minister for Defence, Margarita Robles, conveyed to the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, with whom she held a meeting. During the meeting, they exchanged views and agreed on the importance of the United Nations peace missions in an international scenario where the challenges to be faced are ever greater and the efforts to achieve peace more necessary than ever.

A good example of this is the Spanish contribution, both to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon. Our country has been present there since September 2006. For almost 20 years, the members of the successive contingents deployed there have performed their work impeccably, which has earned them and continues to earn them recognition and gratitude from the Lebanese authorities.

A contingent of 650 Spanish military personnel, 500 of whom belong to the Canarias XVI Brigade, is in charge of securing the country's southern border following the weakening of Hezbollah militias.
