A total of 1,280,505 passengers and 316,973 vehicles crossed the Strait of Gibraltar from 15 June to 31 July, an increase of 2.5 and 2.6 percent, respectively, compared to the same period last year.

The 36th edition of Operation Crossing the Strait (OPE), coordinated by the Directorate General of Civil Protection and Emergencies of the Ministry of Home Affairs, runs from 15 June to 15 September 2025. Forecasts for this year point to a 5 per cent increase in the number of vehicles compared to the previous year and a more moderate increase in the number of passengers, which could be around 4 per cent.

With the start of August, vehicle and passenger traffic is expected to increase this weekend. In view of these forecasts, and with the aim of reducing crowding, the Directorate General for Civil Protection and Emergencies recommends planning ahead for journeys on the roads that converge at the ports of embarkation, especially in Algeciras, and, if possible, using alternative routes. It also advises coming with a fixed-date ticket so that boats can be accessed in an orderly and fluid manner and to reduce waiting times at the port.

Broad operation for the OPE 2025

In addition to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the OPE envisages a broad operation involving numerous government bodies such as the State Ports and the Directorate General of the Merchant Marine, belonging to the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda; the Directorate General of Public Health of the Ministry of Health; and the Government Delegations and Sub-delegations where the ports of embarkation are located. The scope of the State Plan includes Algeciras and Tarifa, in Cadiz, Almeria, Malaga, Motril (Granada), Alicante, Valencia, Melilla and Ceuta.
