Unemployment fell by 67,420 in April to 2,512,718, the lowest figure since July 2008

The number of unemployed people registered in the offices of the Public State Employment Service (SEPE) at the end of April fell by 67,420 compared with the previous month (-2.61%).
In year-on-year terms, there were 153,782 fewer people unemployed, 5.77% less than in April 2024.
With this reduction, registered unemployment stood at 2,512,718, the lowest figure since July 2008.
Unemployment by economic sector
By economic sector, registered unemployment fell in the Services sector by 49,660 people (-2.66%), Construction by 3,817 people (-2.01%), Agriculture by 3,323 people (-3.92%), and Industry by 2,920 people (-1.48%). It also fell among the previously unemployed group by 7,700 (-3.18%).
Unemployment by sex and age
Female unemployment decreased by 38,291 women (-2.46%) in relation to March, with the total standing at 1,515,487.
Male unemployment also fell by 29,129 men (-2.84%), with a registered total of 997,231 people. The number of registered unemployed people has not fallen below the one million mark since March 2008.
Unemployment among young people under 25 years of age fell in April by 20,095 people (-10.17%) compared with the previous month, five times the rate of decline of the rest of the age groups. This is the largest decline in an April since 2001.
The total number of young people registered is 177,429, the lowest in the historical series in a month of April.
Unemployment by autonomous community
Unemployment fell in all the autonomous communities, led by Andalusia, Catalonia and Valencia in absolute terms.
Contracts signed
The total number of contracts registered in April was 1,140,733. Of these, 507,903 were permanent, representing 44.52% of all contracts.
Unemployment benefits in March
The total number of beneficiaries at the end of the month was 1,625,892. The coverage rate of the unemployment protection system in March was 76.32%.
The average monthly expenditure per beneficiary in March, excluding the agricultural subsidy in Andalusia and Extremadura, was €1,315, representing an increase of €210.10 (19%) over the same month the previous year.
Investment in benefits amounted to €2.085 billion.
