In Spain, the programme is coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and Sport, through the Spanish Cultural Heritage Institute (IPCE), promoting, until November, the organisation of hundreds of extraordinary activities throughout the country.
Over the next two months, different monuments and places of interest in Spain will open their doors to visitors for cultural events, exhibitions, artistic performances, interactive workshops, conferences and guided tours aimed at all audiences. The aim is to highlight the importance and current contribution of cultural traditions and techniques in our societies.
The IPCE is participating in this edition of the European Heritage Days as the coordinating institution in Spain and as an organiser of activities. On 26 and 27 September, the public will be able to enjoy special guided tours of its headquarters in Madrid. They will offer a look at Intangible Heritage in terms of traditions, knowledge and cultural techniques.
For its part, the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid has organised several activities, among them, for the month of October, 'Living Heritage in the MAN: the Jewish collections and the celebration of Shabbat', which will consist of a guided tour and an activity that will combine explanations with sound, gastronomic and olfactory elements.
The prehistoric beehives in Valencia, the celebration of the Rosarios de la Aurora in Murcia and the Berrocal Dolmen Ensemble in Huelva are other elements of Spanish Historical Heritage around which activities are being organised in the framework of the EHD 2023, which aims to highlight the richness and diversity of European cultural heritage and promote dialogue, inclusion and cross-border cooperation.
The European Heritage Days serve as a reminder of the value and importance of our shared cultural heritage, which encompasses both tangible and intangible aspects of our identity," said Marija Pejčinović Burić, Secretary General of the Council of Europe. As European Commission Vice-President Margaritis Schinas points out, "projects aimed at communities that reinforce a sense of unity and collective understanding are more valuable than ever".
