The Government of Spain has launched the call for the Strategic Microelectronics and Semiconductor Project - known as the PERTE Chip- to strengthen the existing ecosystem of design centres in Spain and attract new players.

The call for proposals for the Chip Missions has been made by the Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI), attached to the Ministry of Science and Innovation, and coordinated with the Ministry of Economy and Digital Transformation and the special commissioner of the PERTE Chip. They are aimed at R&D research projects that enhance scientific capabilities in the field of microelectronics and semiconductors, stimulate public-private collaboration and improve the knowledge base and technology of Spanish companies.

This is one of the pillars of the PERTE Chip, approved a year ago by the Council of Ministers with the aim of making Spain one of the European benchmarks in the semiconductor and microelectronics industry. These grants, awarded on a competitive basis, have a budget of 60 million euros financed by the Next Generation EU funds and will strengthen the existing ecosystem of design centres in Spain and attract new players.

Variable funding intensity

Chip Missions will finance cooperative business R&D projects - with the possibility of establishing consortia - with a budget of between EUR 3 million and EUR 15 million, with a variable maximum grant intensity: 65 % for large companies; 75 % for medium-sized companies; and 80 % for small companies.

Actions must necessarily adhere to the principle of not causing significant harm to the environment (DNSH - "Do Not Significant Harm" principle), which helps to bring significant added value in terms of environment and sustainability.

Applications may be submitted from 5 June to 17 July at 12:00 pm, on the CDTI's electronic headquarters. These calls within the framework of the programme 'Science and Innovation Missions linked to PERTE Chip' are aligned with the strategic objectives of the Government's strategic project and under the auspices of the State Plan for Scientific, Technical Research and Innovation 2021-2023.
