Social Security registers 21,309 more foreign contributors in April

Since February 2020 (prior to the impact of the pandemic), the system has recorded an increase of almost 405,000 workers from other countries, of which more than 250,000 have joined in the last twelve months.

This figure in April represents 12.6% of the total number of national insurance contributors, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Average contributors

In average terms and without seasonal adjustment, i.e. in the original series, Social Security registered 2,606,683 foreign contributors in April, 80,795 more than in the previous month. Of the total, 872,131 workers come from EU countries (33.5%) and 1,734,551 from third countries (the remaining 66.5%). The largest groups of foreign workers came from Romania (344,492), Morocco (329,227), Italy (170,487), Colombia (146,952) and Venezuela (133,782). Of the total, 55.6% are men and 44.4% are women.

In the past twelve months, the average number of contributors from other countries has grown by 10.7%, i.e., 252,169 employed people have been gained.

62,000 Ukrainian contributors

In addition, and among the various nationalities, there are 63,507 national insurance contributors from Ukraine. This is 16,200 more than in January 2022, prior to the start of the war, representing an increase of 34.8%.

The majority of workers (88.3%) coming from Ukraine working in our country are covered by the general system, i.e. they are salaried workers, and 11.6% are self-employed.

Systems and sectors

Overall, 83% of foreign contributors are in the general system and total 2,184,098. In April, all sectors under this system expanded in terms of number of workers. The highest numbers of employed people were in Accommodation (11.4%), followed by Artistic Activities (3.9%) and Public Administration (3.3%). Regarding the special systems of the General Scheme, Agrarian (5.8%) stands out, along with Household (0.9%), increasing by almost one point.

For its part, the self-employed system has 417,335 foreign contributors. Of all the self-employed people from other countries, 15% come from China, 11% from Romania and 8.9% from Italy.
