Compared to April 2022, unemployment fell by 234,133 people (-7.75%).

Registered unemployment stood at 2,788,370, below 2.8 million for the first time in this month since 2008, a figure that brings us back to the boom scenario prior to the financial crisis, with the lowest unemployment figures in the historical series.

In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment fell by 2,646 people.

Unemployment by sector

By economic sector, with respect to March, registered unemployment fell in all sectors.

In the Services sector by 52,216 (-2.56%), Industry by 5,391 (-2.36%), Agriculture by 4,296 (-3.79%) and Construction by 4,014 (-1.84%).

In the 'without previous employment' group, unemployment decreased by 7,973 people (-3.05%).

Unemployment by sex and age

Unemployment fell by 38,756 women (-2.26%) to 1,679,567, marking a low since 2008.

Male unemployment stood at 1,108,803, as the total number of unemployed men fell by 35,134 (-3.07%) compared to March.

Unemployment among young people under 25 fell in April by 19,848 people (-9.23%) compared to the previous month, a rate of decline that is three times the -2.6% of general unemployment.

Unemployment by autonomous community

Registered unemployment in April 2023 fell in 17 Autonomous Communities.

The sharpest falls in absolute numbers were in Andalusia (-20,551), Catalonia (-9,506) and Castilla-La Mancha (-6,645).

Recruitment

The total number of contracts registered in April was 1,157,316.

In April 2023, 530,537 permanent employment contracts were registered, 45.84% of all contracts.

In the year so far, 2,169,717 permanent contracts have been signed up to April 2023, 45.6% of the total for the first four months of the year.

The number of temporary contracts registered in April 2023 was 626,779.

This is 124,668 (-16.59%) less than the same month of the previous year. In cumulative terms, 2,588,245 temporary contracts were registered in the first four months, a decrease of 1,806,242 (-41.10%) compared to the same period in 2022.

Benefits in March

The total number of existing beneficiaries at the end of March was 1,787,538.

The coverage of the unemployment protection system during March was 66.61%, the same indicator in March 2022 was 59.80%, an increase of 11.4% and its highest value in a decade.

It should be remembered that the amount of the benefit has also been raised by increasing the calculation basis from 50% to 60% of the regulatory base after reversing the cut made to this amount in 2012.

Total benefit spending in March 2023 amounted to 1.9049 billion euros, similar to the same month of the previous year.

In March 2023, the average monthly spending per beneficiary - excluding the agricultural subsidy in Andalusia and Extremadura - was 1,089.1 euros.
