Juan Carlos Campo takes part in meeting of Delegate Committee of Conference of Ministers of Justice of Ibero-American countries

This Delegate Committee is currently made up of Cuba, Spain, Paraguay, Portugal and Uruguay, as elected at the Plenary Assembly of 2019 with a four-year mandate.

This is the first time in over 15 years that Spain, which holds one of the Assistant General Secretariats of the organisation, has formed part of its top governing body. The meeting of this Delegate Committee seeks to take note of the activities carried out by the General Secretariat of the COMJIB and to resolve the most important issues of the Conference.

At this video-conference meeting, Juan Carlos Campo reported that the Council of Ministers has presented the Treaty of Medellin to Parliament for its approval and proceed to deposit the ratification instrument. The Minister for Justice pointed out that this treaty "will help step up the fight against organised crime and impunity, while increasing guarantees of security and trust in our international legal cooperation".

In his speech, the Minister for Justice reiterated his "confidence in the organisation and the ever more positive effect that sharing experiences and agreeing strategies in the field of justice is having on our citizens".

For his part, the Secretary-General of COMJIB, Enrique Gil Botero, addressed in his speech the measures adopted to manage the crisis stemming from COVID-19 and took stock of the extraordinary ministerial meeting to be held on 22 April 2020, as well as the participation in international events and forums and the dialogue with regional bodies and institutions, among other issues.

He also reviewed the current economic-financial situation of the body, along with the introduction by the Secretary-General of the strict financial discipline and cost containment measures approved by the Plenary Assembly of Medellin (2019).

Finally, the forecasts for the Conference work plan 2020-2021 were reviewed. In this regard, the COMJIB has five lines of work which were approved at the Plenary Assembly: the Ministry of Justice will head up international legal cooperation, IberRed and the fight against cross-border organised crime and participate in access to justice, new technologies applied to the Administration of Justice and gender equality.

The meeting was attended by the Ministers of Justice of Cuba, Paraguay and Portugal, together with the Director for Constitutional, Legal and Registry Affairs of the Uruguayan Ministry of Education.
