Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge encourages participation in 20th edition of European Mobility Week

The Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge has once again signed up to events under the European Mobility Week initiative, which will hold its 20th edition from 16 to 22 September. Registration to take part is now open and available at www.mobilityweek.eu, and will close in mid-September. The slogan chosen for this year is "Zero-emission mobility for all".

European Mobility Week is a campaign designed to raise awareness, both among political leaders and ordinary European citizens, of the negative consequences of the excessive use of cars in cities for public health and for the environment. It also reminds us of the benefits of the use of sustainable transport, such as cycling and walking. The proposal seeks to find new solutions to reduce the problems deriving from transport through the exchange of experiences, which are then passed on to local authorities in those countries that take part in the initiative.

The European Commission has chosen zero-emission mobility as the theme for this year's event. The European Union urges citizens to promote the use of means of transport with low emissions in the transportation of people and goods in urban areas, in order to gain in efficiency, speed, savings and sustainability.

Spain, a leader in participation

Since it began back in the year 2000, Spain has been the leading participant in European Mobility Week. Last year, of the 3,136 European towns and cities that signed up to the initiative, 561 were Spanish. And of the 8,070 permanent measures presented, 2,202 came from Spanish municipalities.

In recent editions, European Mobility Week has been warmly welcomed by civil society, social organisations, institutions and companies, which have signed up to the activities related to sustainable mobility to raise awareness among citizens of the benefits of choosing non-polluting means of transport. In 2019, 238 good practices were implemented in Spain, with 135 participants.

The Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, as the national coordinator of the European project, is in charge of the task of publicising and supporting this initiative, which is framed within the policies being carried out, both in terms of air quality, climate change and the circular economy, among others.

The initiative, which arose in 2000, was originally known as "In town, without my car". As from 2002, this proposal was integrated into what is now known as "European Mobility Week", which is held from 16 to 22 September each year to promote sustainable mobility and to foster the development of good practices and permanent measures regarding mobility. The key day of that week is 22 September, known as "Car Free Day".
