The number of people in tourism sector jobs accounted for 14.3% of total employment in the Spanish economy, while the unemployment rate stood at 10.7%. Furthermore, the number of salaried employees in the tourism sector in the third quarter of 2019 rose by 4.5% year-on-year to 2,361,266, accounting for 83.4% of the total.
It is particularly worth noting the number of permanent employment contracts in this quarter as the number of salaried employees on this type of contract rose by 8.2% (64% of all contracts), while the number of salaried employees on a temporary contract fell (down 1.4%).
The State Secretary for Tourism, Isabel Oliver, said "these positive figures reveal an improvement in job quality and working conditions, and consolidate the growing trend in the number of salaried employees on a permanent employment contract, when compared with more precarious forms of employment".
In terms of working hours, the number of salaried employees on a full-time contract rose by 5.9% and now account for 77.2% of the total, while the number of salaried employees on a part-time contract only rose by 0.1%.
By autonomous region
The autonomous regions with the largest tourism flows (Catalonia, Andalusia, the Region of Madrid, the Canary Islands and the Region of Valencia) are, in turn, the regions where the most tourism jobs were created, together accounting for 75.2% of all people working in this sector in the third quarter of 2019.
As regards growth in the number of tourism jobs, La Rioja (21.7%), Ceuta and Melilla (16.3%), Extremadura (12%) and Cantabria (11.2%) posted the highest figures, while Murcia, the Balearic Islands and Navarre were the regions posting the greatest declines in tourism job numbers when compared with the same quarter of the previous year.
