The Spanish entities participating in the European research and innovation programme, Horizon 2020, have placed Spain as the leading country in terms of the receipt of subsidies in two of the latest rounds of proposals: challenge 6 "Europe in a changing world: inclusive, innovative and reflective societies", and the programme "Science with and for Society" (SwafS).
Furthermore, the results of the first cut off in the round of proposals entitled "Future and Emerging Technologies" (FET Open) place Spanish entities in third position in terms of returns and in first position in the coordination of proposals scheduled to receive funding. In total, Spain has received 43 million euros from these three rounds of proposals in 2019.
Spain, with 16.7 million euros, is the country that has obtained most resources in the round of proposals from one of the seven social challenges identified by Horizon 2020, the so-called "Europe in a changing world: inclusive, innovative and reflective societies", which seeks to foster greater comprehension from Europe and propose solutions in a context of unprecedented transformations and growing global inter-dependence. Our country also heads up a total of 10 of the 56 proposals selected.
Spain also stands in top position in the programme entitled "Science with and for Society", obtaining 6.6 million euros, 16% of EU-28 funding. This heading of Horizon 2020 is geared towards adapting European research to the needs, values and expectations of society in issues such as fostering R&D+i, scientific education and citizen science, among others. Under this line of financing, 30 participating Spanish entities have obtained financing, participating in 22 of the 24 projects approved, which cover almost all of the thematic fields.
Lastly, in the round of proposals for Future and Emerging Technologies (FET Open), Spain stands in third place in the receipt of funds, with 19.5 million euros (13.8% of the EU-28 funding), behind only Germany and the United Kingdom. Spanish research groups coordinate the highest number of proposals, with 13 of the 53 projects approved.
