The Spanish Air Force has begun an investigation to determine the cause of the accident. The duty judge for the local area attended the scene of the accident as well as a military judge given that this was a military aircraft and the crew were members of the Armed Forces.

The CASA C-101 aviojet is a low-wing single engine jet-powered aircraft whose missions correspond to basic advanced training and personnel training. It is currently used by the Spanish Air Force Academy in San Javier (Murcia), the Matacán Group of Schools (GRUEMA) in Salamanca and the Armaments Logistics and Experimentation Centre (CLAEX) in Torrejón (Madrid).

By express wish of both families, the Ministry of Defence is withholding the identity of the two military personnel who lost their lives.
