More than 24 million Spaniards voted in the tenth general elections of Spanish democracy

On Sunday, 20 November, Spain held its tenth general elections. More than 70% of the 35,799,208 Spanish citizens who were called to vote exercised their constitutional right to select their representatives in the Lower and Upper Houses of Parliament.
71.69% of the population voted in the elections to the Lower House of Parliament (24,590,557 votes). 28.31% abstained.
71.17% of the population voted in the elections to the Upper House of Parliament (24,411,187 votes). 28.83% abstained.
The Spanish Parliament arising from the elections will be convened on 13 December 2011, as established by Royal Decree 1329/2011 on the dissolution of the Parliament chosen on 9 March 2008 and call for general elections.
There have been ten General Elections in Spain since the Spanish Constitution was approved in 1978: 1979, 1982, 1986, 1989, 1993, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008 and 2011.
