The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, conveyed Spain's firm position to the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, at this crucial moment for the negotiations of the next Multiannual Financial Framework and the future Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
At the meeting in Seville, the minister stressed that the CAP must be a fully common policy, with a solid budget and a differentiated architecture to avoid its integration into a "single fund" which, according to Spain, will generate inequalities between Member States and a renationalisation of agricultural policy.
The minister underlined the effectiveness of the current model, a fairer, more social and egalitarian CAP, with more than 590,000 applications for aid in 2025 and and broad participation in eco-schemes, and stressed the importance of guaranteeing clear rules, stability and legal certainty for farmers and livestock breeders.
Spain expressed concern about the increased co-financing required for sectoral interventions and agro-climatic actions, which could strain national budgets and jeopardise the continuity of essential measures.
Planas argued that the future CAP must strengthen the profitability of agriculture, boost investments linked to the climate transition, and support young people and women in rural areas, while also making real progress toward simplifying its management. "Every euro allocated to the CAP must translate into greater productivity, sustainability, and a better future for the sector", the minister stated.
