Spending by international tourists exceeds 105 billion to September, 7% more than a year ago

The number of international tourists arriving in Spain in the first nine months of 2025 exceeded 76.4 million, an increase of 3.5% compared to the same period of the previous year.
In September, 9.7 million international tourists visited the country, an increase of 0.8% year-on-year; tourists who spent €13.364 billion euros in our country, 6% more than in September 2024.
These data reinforce the trend of spending growth exceeding the increase in the pace of arrivals, which is more moderate in 2025 than last year. This evolution of the sector aligns with the Ministry of Industry and Tourism's commitment to a new, more sustainable tourism model that prioritises quality over quantity, decentralises destinations, and diversifies the offer.
In the first nine months of 2025, the United Kingdom was the country with the highest cumulative spending (18% of the total) and an increase of 4.3% in September, followed by Germany (11.7%), which decreased its spending by -0.7% in the ninth month, and France (7.5%), which did so by -2.1%, also in September. In terms of expenditure, the 'rest of the world' countries as a whole stood out in September, with expenditure growing by 10.5% year-on-year.
For their part, the autonomous communities with the highest accumulated expenditure were Catalonia (18.5% of the total), the Canary Islands (17%), and the Balearic Islands (17.4%).
In terms of visitors, the main countries of origin up to September were the UK (with almost 15.3 million and an increase of 4% compared to the same period in 2024), France (with more than 10.2 million and a slight decrease of 0.1%), and Germany (with more than 9.5 million and an increase of 1.4%).
The main destinations in the year to date are Catalonia (15.8 million tourists, unchanged from the same period of the previous year); the Balearic Islands (13.7 million, up 3%) and Andalusia (11.5 million, up 7.3%).
Spending continues to outpace visitor growth
In September, the increase in spending by international tourists was 5.2 percentage points higher than the increase in the number of foreign visitors. Specifically, in September, Spain received 9.7 million international tourists, who generated a total expenditure of more than €13.3 billion.
During this month, each tourist spent an average of €1,380, which represents an increase of 5.1% compared to September of the previous year. The average daily expenditure of visitors grew by 4.5% year-on-year to €204.
Meanwhile, the length of stay of the majority of tourists was four to seven nights, with more than 4.7 million and an annual increase of 0.3%.
In September, the United Kingdom continued to be the leading country of origin for visitors, with more than 2.1 million visitors who spent €2.555 billion in Spain. This is followed in second place by Germany, with 1.2 million tourists and an expenditure of €1.64 billion; in third place are tourists from France, with around one million visitors and an expenditure of €998 million.
Balearic Islands, top destination in September
The Balearic Islands was the main destination for international tourists in September, with 2,187,288 visitors in this month and a year-on-year growth of 1.8%. Catalonia received a total of 2,020,003 visitors (-1.4%); in third place was Andalusia with 1,479,709 (3.4%).
The autonomous communities with the greatest weight in terms of tourist spending in September were the Balearic Islands (with 21.3% of the total), Catalonia (19.2%) and Andalucia (15.2%). The annual rate of tourist spending increased 5.3% in the Balearic Islands, 3.6% in Catalonia and 7.6% in the Valencia Region.
