The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, and his Dominican counterpart, Roberto Álvarez, met in Madrid
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has met in Madrid with his counterpart from the Dominican Republic, Roberto Álvarez, with whom he reviewed the excellent bilateral relations that unite the two countries, as well as relations with the European Union and key regional issues in Latin America.
Spain and the Dominican Republic - a reliable partner and historical friend - maintain satisfactory and intense bilateral relations that cover all areas. This was made clear at the Second High Level Political Dialogue between the two countries, which took place in Santo Domingo in November 2024.
Intense collaboration
During the meeting, Albares highlighted the good collaboration between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs, which are working together on the reform of the Dominican foreign service and the consular service.
The minister especially highlighted the importance of Spanish cooperation, which has been present in the Dominican Republic for 35 years, with more than 125 million euros of Official Development Assistance committed and/or delivered, prioritising institutional strengthening, gender and reducing inequalities. The Country Partnership Framework 2025-2028 was signed last week.
On the economic front, Spain, with a large investment presence in the country, intends to continue bolstering its trade and investment ties in the Dominican Republic.
International agenda
Relations with the European Union and regional issues also occupied a large part of the meeting. In particular, Albares highlighted the importance of the upcoming international events to be held in Spain: the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development, to be held in Seville at the end of June, and the Ibero-American Summit in Madrid in 2026.
Minister Albares also expressed Spain's commitment to Haiti to prevent the crisis from affecting the stability of the Dominican Republic and the entire region. Our country, as Albares reminded his counterpart, supports the deployment of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, with a total contribution of 4 million euros, and supports the possibility of it becoming a United Nations Peacekeeping Operation, as the only way to re-establish security and stabilise the country.
