The Minister for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, has held a meeting with the European Commissioner for the Environment, Water Resilience and Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall, to whom he has conveyed Spain's support for giving new impetus to the Green Deal so that it remains an essential and guiding element for this new Commission.

Albares, who received the European Commissioner during her visit to Madrid, supported the proposals for regulatory simplification presented by the Commission and agreed with the Commissioner on maintaining the EU's climate objectives and green agenda. The Spanish minister believes that reaching our climate targets in a cost-effective way is essential for economic growth, economic security and increasing Europe's industrial competitiveness.

During the meeting with the Commissioner, they also agreed to defend the EU's resilience, to maximise the benefits of the green transition through rules-based trade and to strengthen the EU's strategic autonomy. In the same vein, they argued that one of the priorities should be the inclusion of policies to improve risk management in the Water Resilience Strategy, which should enable member states to withstand extreme events such as floods and droughts.
