The number of people registered in the State Public Employment Service Offices (SEPE) at the end of May fell by 49,260 people (-1.77%) compared to the previous month.

Registered unemployment stood at 2,739,110 people, the lowest figure for a month of May since 2008.

This is a very positive decline in a context of quality recruitment and record highs in both affiliation and the labour force.

In year-on-year terms, unemployment has fallen by 183,881 people, a hefty percentage drop of 6.29%.

Unemployment by sector

Registered unemployment fell in all sectors: in the Services sector by 34,665 people (-1.74%), in Industry by 4,622 (-2.07%), in Construction by 3,896 (-1.82%) and in Agriculture by 2,501 (-2.30%). The group Without Previous Employment also recorded a fall of 3,576 people unemployed (-1.41 %).

Unemployment by sex and age

The reduction in male and female unemployment is similar in absolute terms. Female unemployment fell by 24,540 women (-1.46 %) to a total of 1,655,027 unemployed.

Male unemployment stood at 1,084,083, a decrease of 24,720 men (-2.23%).

Unemployment of young people under 25 fell in May by 7,208 people (-3.69%) compared with the previous month, doubling the percentage rate of the general decrease. The total number of unemployed young people is the lowest in the historical series: 188,043 people.

Unemployment by autonomous community

In percentage terms, it fell most in the Balearic Islands, Castile-La Mancha and Castile and Leon.

Registered unemployment in May 2023 fell in 17 autonomous communities. The sharpest falls in absolute numbers were in Andalusia (-6,521), Castile-La Mancha (-6,138) and Galicia (-4,909).

In year-on-year terms, unemployment is falling, especially in the Balearic Islands.

Recruitment

The total number of new contracts registered in May was 1,412,061.

In May 2023, 624,853 permanent employment contracts were registered, 44.25% of all contracts.

Cumulative recruitment in the first five months of 2023 reached 6,170,023, which is 1,632,895 more contracts (-20.93%) than in the same period of the previous year.

Benefits in the month of April

The coverage of the unemployment protection system during the month of April 2023 was 64.9% (+9%), while the same indicator in April 2022 was 59.52%.

The average monthly expenditure per beneficiary in April, excluding the agricultural subsidy in Andalusia and Extremadura, was €1,036.5, representing an increase of €48.4 (4.9%) over the same month the previous year.

Total benefit spending in April 2023 rose to just over €1.721 billion.
