The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, and the Romanian Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Petre Daea, have discussed various issues relating to food safety and the sustainability of agricultural production at the sectoral meeting held in Castellón de la Plana as part of the first summit between the governments of the two countries.

The meeting dealt with the problems of access to the fertiliser market, the sustainable use of plant protection products and the development of new breeding techniques. Romania was one of the 15 EU Member States that supported the document that Spain presented to the EU Council of Ministers last Monday, in which it proposed a series of short, medium and long-term measures to ensure the availability of fertilisers at affordable prices for farmers in order to maintain optimal crop yields and preserve food security.

Ministers exchanged views on two issues currently on the agenda for the European Commission, such as reviewing the regulation on sustainable use of plant protection products, which is currently being processed. The second of these issues, reviewing the regulatory framework for products obtained through new genetic improvement techniques, will be one of the issues that will occupy Spain's rotating presidency in the second half of 2023, when it will try to reach an agreement.

The two ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote collaboration between the two countries in the fields of livestock and plant health, fertilisers and phytosanitary products, quality schemes for agricultural and food products, promotion of the efficient use of water and energy in irrigation systems, digital transformation of the agri-food sector and the rural environment, innovation and knowledge transfer, the role of women and young people in the rural environment and generational change, and the exchange of information and partnerships between Spanish and Romanian scientific research institutes in the field of agriculture and the food industry.
