This was highlighted by the Minister for Science and Innovation, Diana Morant, during a visit to the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), where she also announced that this institution will incorporate two new clinical units, one in the La Paz Hospital in Madrid for paediatric cancer and the other in the 12 de Octubre Hospital for immunotherapy.

"Research is the great hope against cancer, one of the diseases with the greatest impact and importance for our society, both for the patients who suffer from it and for their families," said the minister.

In this regard, she highlighted the work carried out by the nearly 500 researchers at the CNIO to advance cancer research, diagnosis and treatment and underlined that it is a world-class public centre of excellence.

Specifically, it is among the top 10 cancer research centres in the world in terms of the impact of its discoveries and has the Severo Ochoa accreditation of excellence, which is awarded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation to scientific bodies that stand out for their international relevance and impact.

During her visit to the CNIO facilities, the Minister toured the Experimental Therapies Unit, the Molecular Imaging Unit and the Confocal Microscopy Unit, accompanied by the CNIO Director, María Blasco, and the Director of the Carlos III Institute of Health (ISCIII), Cristóbal Belda.

PERTE for Vanguard Health

The Minister also highlighted that the Ministry of Science and Innovation has launched the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) for Vanguard Health, a country plan that has made people's health a priority through the European funds of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

"Through this PERTE, we are going to mobilise €1.5 billion in just three years to promote precision medicine and the development of advanced therapies and make them available to the entire population through our National Health System," she explained.
